Welcome back to the new season. We will continue to train at St Laurence from 6.30 on Wednesdays moving to a 6.00pm start later to make the most of the light. We have two friendlies: this Wednesday 2nd September against Bradford United Reserves at Poulton Field k.o. 6.30 (be there at 6.00) and Sunday 6th September against Coombe Down at Winsley k.o. 2.30. We need to finalise the squad so we need 2 forms (a league registration plus a club registration), 2 passport size photos, a cheque for £60 (or £30 and £30 balance at Christmas) and if you did not sign for us last season proof of birthday (photocopy of birth certificate or passport). Both forms are on the website and I will collect them if you call me. The first game of the season is likely to be the 13th September and Simon will be club captain this season.

The new year has started with 2 – 5 defeat to the team just above us in the League, our goals coming from Carlos and Josh. The difference between the teams was significantly greater than the scoreline suggests however. Matching up player for player for player 1 to 14 Castle Coombe had better players so no disgrace in losing to a team who were individually and collectively superior. We were flattered by this result and losing by double figures would have been a fairer reflection in the opposition’s superiority. We did not play well and this made it easier for them; even if we had been on top of our game we do not have the quality to beat teams of this calibre.
Lose the game game but learn the lesson. I’m not sure what lessons to take from this apart from the realisation that we are probably now a social side with limited motivation and ability to improve rather than a side in development building for future achievements. Losing 4 of our best players in key positions from last season has not provided us with a platform to move forward. We are probably the third best team in the League as we were last season so perhaps we should adjust our expectations acccordingly and make sure we nail third place. I need to think hard about the wisdom of entering the under 18s floodlit league next season as the standard is probably too demanding for the most of players in the current squad and those coming through from the under 16s. Continuing in the under 18s Mid-Wilts on Sunday afternoons may be the more sensible and social option. This will allow players who want more or higher level football to take up Saturday and mid-week opportunities with adult clubs if they want. I would like your views on this.
This Sunday’s game is at home to Castle Combe Colts ‘B’. If selected please meet in the University Car Park (I need help to carry the kit) at 1.00 pm.

Once again the game was off on Sunday. At least we can look forward to plenty of football as the weather improves. I missed training on Saturday morning thanks to a minor operation on my foot but I was pleased to hear that so many under 16s turned up. I intend to be there next Saturday.
Have you ever noticed how some clubs or teams we play against always seem to have a mental attitude that gives them an advantage. Where does this come from, can it be coached to players? Most sports at the elite level rely on sports psychology to improve mental toughness in competition especially professional sports. Football is no exception. Dr Richard Thelwell works with professionals across a number of sports including the Premiership. Here are his top attributes for mentally tough players. Do you recognise any of these attributes in yourself , your team mates or even those teams who always seem to beat us?
1. Having total self belief that you will achieve
2, Always wanting the ball
3. Always react to situations positively
4. Calm under pressure
5. Focus on basics when in trouble
6. Ignore distractions and remain focused
7. Keeping emotions under control
8. Body language creates an aura
9. Have everything outside football under control
10. Enjoy pressure.
There are no short cuts to mental toughness, it has to be developed over time and there are things coaches can do to help. Have a word with me at training if you want to discuss any of this.

Happy New Year. Sadly we didn’t have a game today as Wanderers are still without a manager. Good training session Saturday working on shooting from the edge of the penalty box. Back indoors on Tuesday (under 18s only) at Wiltshire College, 5.30 onwards. We have at least 11 games left (more if we have a cup run) and still in with a shout for 1st or 2nd in the League. Fitness will be crucial in 2009 so I expect everyone to make training whenever possible.
Next game is against Worton and Cheverill ‘B’ at home, Sunday 11th January if we can get a ref.
